Receding Hairlines In Women

A receding hairline, when the hair that frames your hair appears to move back over your head as hair follicles cease to produce healthy hair, is a type of hair loss commonly associated with men, though something similar can occur in women, too.

Named frontal fibrosing alopecia, this type of scarring hair loss appears as a band of hair loss which reaches from ear to ear, over the top of the head. Its a progressive condition, meaning that it may begin as a small amount of hair loss but gradually over time can mean as much as five inches on the hairline recede.

The cause of frontal fibrosing alopecia is thought to be the immune system attacking the hair follicles and causing them to become inflamed. It mostly affects post-menopausal women over the age of 40, and this has lead scientists to think that there may also be a hormonal link, though the relative newness of this type of alopecia may indicate an environmental link, too.

Despite the mixed theories concerning its development, the condition is fairly easy to spot, with a white-ish band of scarring across the front of the hairline, and potentially also inflamed, red hair follicles. Of course, there are other kinds of scarring alopecia, so it is important to get your diagnosis confirmed by a hair loss specialist. Further confirmation may come in the form of various hormone tests, a thyroid function test or a complete blood count.

Sadly, there is no outright cure for this condition, and whilst oral steroids and antimalarials might slow down the progression of the hair loss, they often have bad side effects including depression. Therefore, the ideal treatment is based around trying to control the inflammation that causes the follicle to scar. Whilst hair will never grow from scarred follicles, a hair loss treatment programme that includes minoxidil can prevent further hair loss and increase the density of existing hair.
